RETURN TO PARRISH STREET

Durham, NC | Photography by Morgan Crutchfield

Once a small bike shop filled to the brim with parts and equipment, a corner building on Durham’s Black Wall Street returned to the community as a black-owned business. Ella West Gallery focuses on showcasing contemporary works of fine art by historically marginalized and under-represented communities.

Ella West’s new space takes advantage of tall storefront windows and abundant sunlight. With the street experience in mind, a free-standing wall for art is placed near the storefront windows. Portioning off the space, the wall creates an intimate gallery space beyond and a bold, street-facing exhibit that puts art in view to the community.
