ORANGE COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES

Chapel Hill, NC | Photography by Jim West

The project brings together pet adoption services and countywide animal control functions in an airy 24,000-square-foot structure designed to achieve new levels of economy, efficiency and sustainability for the building type. Passive and active strategies are broadly employed to reduce the consumption of water and energy resources -- a budget and environmental cost in animal sheltering — while also providing healthy, daylit environments for the animals and people. The animals are front and center -- visible through windows along the walk from the parking lot, and through openings in the wall between the reception and adoption area.
