SWIMMING ROOM

A low and rambling L-shaped country house gained a new room, an open-air space for swimming, cooking, gathering, relaxing. Cast-in-place concrete panels provide free-standing enclosure on two sides of the courtyard, opposite the existing walls of the house. The panels support roof structures for shaded spaces, and tall blocking built into the form work left window-like voids, openings that allow controlled views into and out of the new space. The collaboration with landscape designer Maria Lopez-Ibanez yielded a soft and green surround at the enclosing walls.
